Traditional Butler – Dorset

This is a wonderful opportunity for a traditionally trained Butler looking for a service-led position. The role requires pure Butler duties only. A team of housekeeping staff is in place to see to all domestic duties and 24-hour security oversee the running of the estate.

On such occasions when the principals are entertaining more than 10 guests, an Under Butler will be brought in to support you with service.

This position requires a candidate with the highest standards and a team approach. Attention to detail is paramount with all aspects of the role. Additional staff include housekeepers, security, drivers, chefs and personal assistants.

Travel not required: Travel is not required for this role as the principals hire separate private staff to cover overseas properties. Annual leave must be taken during the school holidays when the family are not in residence.

Hours: Thursday-Sunday 08.00 – finishing after dinner service

Accommodation: 2-bedroom cottage (partners and dogs welcome)

Ideal start date: ASAP. A thorough handover with the current Butler must begin by mid-March at the latest.

Responsibilities

• Traditional Butler service, both formal and informal
• Table settings
• Ensuring tableware and linens are in immaculate condition
• Selecting glassware and crockery appropriately for different occasions
• Decanting wines
• Care of silverware, glassware, crockery and fine china
• Management of wine cellar
• Greeting and seeing to guest requests
• Setting up guest rooms for arrival
• Wardrobe management for the gentleman of the household
• Liaising with the PA on weekly agenda and room schedules for any visiting guests
• Working alongside and directing additional Butlers and waiting staff for larger events
• Training junior waiting staff as required
• Following appropriate protocols when engaging with family and guests
• Direct housekeeping team regarding specialist care of fine garments or necessary repairs

Key requirements

• Due to the rural location of the position, applicants must hold a driving licence to ensure their own independence
• Traditional Butler training
• Extensive private household experience. Ideally within a formal household
• DBS background check
